"Ethyn Evans is a current Doctoral Student of Musical Arts in Tuba Performance at The University of Texas under the direction of Professor Charles Villarrubia as a Graduate Teaching Assistant. Ethyn received a Master of Music in Tuba Performance and Pedagogy from Oklahoma State University and a Bachelor of Music Education and Leadership Development from Louisiana State University.
As an active performer, Ethyn has been invited to play at Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, and has been a substitute musician with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Tulsa Symphony, Tulsa Opera, Ft. Smith Symphony, Symphony of Northwest Arkansas, Lawton Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Lake Charles Symphony. He is a performing member of the Backburner Tuba and Euphonium Collective, and he also serves as the Principal Tuba and Soloist for the Calcasieu British Brass Band. Ethyn was recently selected as a semi-finalist for the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Festival Solo Artist Competition, Midwest Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference Solo Artist Competition, the Arnold Jacobs Orchestral Competition, the International Tuba Euphonium Conference Small Ensemble Competition, and was named Principal Tuba of the California Orchestra Academy.
As a passionate educator, Ethyn believes in a student-centered studio within a nurturing and inclusive environment where students may feel safe to explore and learn; recognizing the value of mutual respect and shared learning, he views his students as partners in the educational journey. His students have been awarded placements in TMEA, OKMEA, and LMEA All-State ensembles, NAfME National Honor Bands, various undergraduate music programs, and have received superior ratings at UIL/State Sponsored Solo and Ensemble Competitions. Ethyn is also a member of the International Tuba Euphonium Association Collegiate Committee.
As a sought-after arranger for brass instruments, Ethyn has been commissioned to arrange works for brass quintets, tuba-euphonium quartets, and large brass ensembles around the country. He currently serves on the arrangement/compositional staff for the Austin Brass Collective and the Teupha Camp. His most recent commission was received from the Eastman Tuba Euphonium Academy and will be performed by the combined tuba euphonium ensemble at the 2024 Academy.
His previous teachers include Dr. Ryan Robinson: Associate Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Oklahoma State University, Dr. Nick Beltchev: Assistant Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Western Carolina University, Dr. Charles Goodman: Assistant Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Louisiana State University, Dr. Joe Skillen: Music Department Chair of the University of North Carolina Charlotte, and Professor William Rose: Associate Professor of Music and Assistant Department Head of the Performing Arts at McNeese State University.
